Good morning, Oppo. Sunchaser goes in for rear brake drums and shoes today. I have often considered converting the rear to discs, but most Celica people seem lukewarm on the upgrade. The car isn’t very heavy, and they say there isn’t much improvement.
I am headed for a pretty fun car calendar. The weekend after this coming one, Toby and I road trip to San Diego (considering the desert route, depending on weather) and back on the coast on Highway 1. There are also a few local car shows and meets coming up, and at the end of October my buddy and I are going to Surf City Blitz, as I grabbed Saturday tix for the festival. When I suggested that I might bring the Infiniti, he suggested that it would be poor form to roll to a punk rock festival on the beach in anything but the Sunchaser.
I have a trip coming up to Temecula, and may well take the ‘chaser to that one, but Reno in November will be out. I just found out about a car show in Modesto to raise money for a camp for kids with heart trouble, and I want to do that one, and make a donation as well. I am sad, but I cannot go to a local import car show, but you can't do 'em all.
Radwood LA is December 2, and I already bought a Royalty spot. The JCCS may not want me there, but there are plenty of other, friendlier events.
What would you do if you were me, Oppo? I have reliable, rare old car that I love, so I am trying to do as much car stuff and road trips as I can. A friend told me if I keep driving it this much, stuff is going to keep breaking and I said, “Yes.” I intend to have as much fun as I can with this car. Life is for the living.

Life is for the living. Life is also not always so forgiving. Temper your enthusiasm enough to avoid unrealistic expectations about parts wearing out and downtime.

Uh well from my perspective having a light Japanese classic that had drums in the rear, it’s a huge difference. My braking distance in normal conditions is much better and brake fade over Mt. Tam down to the coast is non longer mushy. I feel it makes the car quite a bit safer.

It’s not an ultra rare ferrari that is worth millions
I thought that was your point of owning the sunchaser, was to drive it. Its not like you cant find parts for it.
And worst case, engine dies, well then it would be time to swap something in with more power, not v12 since you claim it doesn’t fit
Have fun, love your car.

If you plan to drive it enthusiastically, I would go disc brake. A little added safety never hurts.

I’ll admit I’m somewhat surprised they didn’t come with discs all around in the first place. I’d say go for it, but it’s not my money, brake upgrades are never a bad thing.
Yeah, there is always a hint of anxiety about putting more miles on an old car. Every mile is extra wear on something that mig ht br eak that’s potentially unobtanium but that’s just part of it. I enjoy driving it too much not to.

Drum brakes suck because they’re impossible to replace with all those scary springs inside! Discs are much better and much easier upkeep too!

I’d do a disc swap just so I didn’t have to deal with drum brakes ever again. Well except I’m guessing it would be a drum in hat set up for your e-brake if you did the conversion. But you only have to deal with that once in a blue moon.

Drive it. then drive it, and then drive it some more.
fix it when it needs fixing, do all the “preventative maintenance” even when you’re preventing things that my never be a problem.
You’ve put a lot of work into getting the car where it is, don’ t let a little thing like “normal ware” get in the way of that.

Parts wear out and you replace them. What’s the big deal?
Car looks
great
with the new wheels. What did the wheels and tires set you back?
My sun chaser is a ‘91 Corolla Base. No A/C, just roll down the windows and wear the Bose QC headphones (and hope some Chippy doesn’t take issue).
